What’s on your list of books to read in 2008? For church leaders, that list tends to be filled with books on leadership or theology or societal trends.
But sometimes, we learn the most from the unexpected places. My sister gave me a copy of Same Kind of Different as Me and I had some extra time over the Christmas holiday, so I dove in. Little did I know that I would be hooked after just a few pages.
The subtitle on the book says, “a modern-day slave, an international art dealer, and the unlikely woman who bound them together,” but that only gives you a glimpse of the storyline. I don’t want to give away the plot, but I will say that the book challenged my ideas about poverty, homelessness, and racial discrimination in America. It’s an inspiring story of the far-reaching ways that God can change the world through a single person who follows Him in faith. For “professionals” in ministry, it may shake some of our ideas about how and to whom God speaks most clearly. And on top of all that, it’s written in a rich and very readable style that will make you want to pass it along to others.
As you can see, I’m sold! Get a copy, a box of tissues, and an open heart, and put Same Kind of Different as Me at the top of your 2008 reading list.
